  • The short answer: Yes

As with any healthcare intervention there are risks associated with chiropractic. The most common include muscle and joint soreness following soft tissue and adjustments. However, chiropractors spend years in school training to recognize the difference between conditions we can and cannot treat as well as situations where certain aspects of treatment should be avoided.

This could mean anything from tailoring the adjustment positioning for patient comfort to avoiding high velocity adjustments on individuals with osteoporosis.

One of the most common objections to chiropractic is that cervical adjustments can lead to stroke. The most recent study to dispute this claim (Whedon et al., 2023) found that among 53 million Medicare beneficiaries there was no increased risk for stroke in patients who received cervical manipulation when compared to control groups. With that said, chiropractors are trained to minimize any potential risk by screening for risk factors and pre-existing conditions to ensure that safety is the number one priority.

It is always a good idea to have a conversation with your chiropractor to make sure that the treatment you get is tailored to your specific needs and preferences.

  • What a lot of people don’t know is that chiropractic is practiced in many different ways. That is why it’s so important to find a clinician whose style and treatment philosophy works for you. There are chiropractors who treat only the upper neck, some who use special tables to help with treatment, and even those who choose to focus on treating children and young adults. While chiropractors all receive a similar education through their college, the specialization that they choose significantly impacts the populations that they best serve so finding out more about any chiropractor you are planning on seeing is critical.
